The long awaited second chapter ofDeltarunefinally released with little warning last week, and fans are already digging into every nook and cranny, eager to find any secret to Toby Fox’s newest spectacular creation. Among those discoveries were the respective secret bosses for each chapter.Spoilers for bothDeltaruneChapter 1 and Chapter 2 follow.

In the first chapter ofDeltarune, the secret boss is the enigmatic Jevil, the former court jester of the kingdom who went mad after meeting “a strange someone” who permanently changed the small clown’s personality. After some chaos, Jevil is eventually thrown in the dungeon and the key smashed to pieces. Yet Jevil is unbothered by his apparent imprisonment, instead viewing everyone else as prisoners, and he is the only one truly free.

Jevil and Spamton in Deltarune

After inviting you into his cell (and after a challenging boss fight), Jevil turns into an item based on how the player deals with him, but not before spouting foreboding prophecies of events to come. Overall, Jevil’s fight is manic, psychedelic, and absolutely goofy, yet Jevil himself is something between aLooney Tunescharacter andPennywise from Stephen King’sIt. His enigmatic nature and standout battle song was something fans of Chapter 1 were sure to remember.

On the surface, Spamton from Chapter 2 (full name Spamton G. Spamton) bears a striking tonal resemblance to his secret boss colleague. His jerking movements and peculiar manner of speech create a deep sense of unease, even if there is some humor to be found in it. Like Jevil before him, Spamton’s life was changed after coming into contact with an unknown individual, launching him from relative obscurity to success as a dealmaker. Yet it was not to last, and without his mysterious benefactor, Spamton fell to rock bottom as quickly as he flew to the top. Obsessed with becoming a “big shot” again, he tasks the player with alengthy side quest to helpDeltarune’s secret boss.

Deltarune Chapter 2 Big Spamton

Like Jevil, this side quest ends with asurreal and challenging boss fight, which ends with him gifting the player a piece of equipment depending on how they bested him. The boss fight with Spamton will be particularly nostalgic to fans ofUndertale, Toby Fox’s original seminal hit, bringing back particular mechanics to this boss fight as well as Spamton himself resembling a boss from that game’s “genocide route.”

Contrasting Insanity in Deltarune’s Secret Bosses

The impetus for both Jevil and Spamton’s both seem to bea mysterious individual inDeltarunethat neither of them know. However where Jevil was gifted with prophecy and looking to the future, Spamton was given success and now yearns for the past. While the two secret bosses have very similar tones and eerieness about them, the exact source of their unhinged nature differs: Jevil is a secret-keeper and burdened by some forbidden knowledge, acutely aware of what he’s been given as he taunts the player of future events. Spamton conversely is tragically cloying to the player directly in an attempt to reclaim some lost glory days, utterly ignorant of what he’s come into contact with.

Together the two create an intriguing contrast, and players can only wait with baited breath for future chapters ofDeltaruneto see what each of their secret bosses will be like. Whether the vibe for each of them will be equally unsettling, and their respective madness brought about by contact with an unknown individual, is anyone’s guess. KnowingToby Fox’s penchant for unconvential storytelling, it’s highly possible that what lies in store will defy all predictions.
