Last week,Kingdom Hearts 3game director Tetsuya Nomura claimed that it would bepossible to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch. However, according to information from Game Informer writer Imran Khan, it was determined by Square Enix and Nintendo that it would be “unfeasible” to portKingdom Hearts 3to Nintendo’s handheld/home console hybrid.
“Last I heard, there was a talk between Nintendo and Square Enix about what they could do withKingdom Hearts 3. It was deemed unfeasible to getKingdom Hearts 3on the Switch,” Khan said while appearing on Kinda Funny Games Daily. He acknowledged that while the Switch technically supports Unreal Engine 4, the engine that powersKingdom Hearts 3, that ultimately the game is just too demanding for the Switch’s hardware.
Assuming Khan’s information is accurate, Switch owners may be disappointed to learn thatKingdom Hearts 3is not coming to the console. However, Khan didn’t rule out the possibility of Square Enix bringing the classicKingdom Heartsgames to the Switch instead, saying, “That’s probably what they settled on.”
If Square Enix does bring classicKingdom Heartsgames to the Switch, then it will likely be in the form of theKingdom Hearts: The Story So Faror the HD Collections. These compilations bring together the bulk of theKingdom Heartsgames that have been released to date, and include some original content tohelp bridge the gapbetween the originals andKingdom Hearts 3.
However, it’s too early to rule out the possibility ofKingdom Hearts 3coming to the Switch at some point in some capacity. After all, Nomura himself said a Switch port was possible, and maybe Square Enix could downgrade the game in some areas to make it function on the Switch.
Regardless, considering the Switch’s sales success andKingdom Hearts' history on Nintendo platforms, aKingdom Heartsgame of some kind coming to the Switch seems more like a matter of “when” than “if.”
Kingdom Hearts 3is out now for PS4 and Xbox One.
