Poliwhirl is one of the original 151 Pokemon available in the originalPokemongames and has made a return inPokemon SwordandPokemon Shield’s Isle of Armor DLC. This pure water-type Pokemon evolves from Poliwag starting at level 25 and has a branching evolution past that point after becoming a Poliwhirl.
With many new players coming toPokemonwithPokemon SwordandPokemon Shield, these newer players may be unsure how to evolve Poliwhirl into one of its branching evolutions, Politoed. Poliwhirl can either evolve into Poliwrath or Politoed depending on the conditions presented to it.

Like Poliwhirl, Politoed is apure water-type Pokemon. Unlike Poliwhirl, it was introduced in the second generation of Pokemon.
The first step to evolving a Poliwhirl is by catching one. Poliwhirl can be found in Brawlers Cave, which is a new location introduced in theIsle of Armor DLC. The second step is obtaining an item known as a King’s Rock.
A King’s Rock is a held item that has the chance to cause the holder’s moves to cause a Pokemon that’s hit to flinch if hit first. It can be found inPokemon SwordandPokemon Shieldon Route 8. However, things aren’t that simple, as it can be found being held by wild Hawlucha with only a 5% chance.
After obtaining this rare item, players should give the King’s Rock to the Poliwhirl they wish to evolve. The next step however requires another player to pull off.
The final step to getting a Politoed via evolution is to trade the Poliwhirl holding the King’s Rock to another player. It can simply be traded back, but for many players, this may require aNintendo Switch Online accountconsidering current world conditions. After the trade is complete, the Poliwhirl will evolve into Politoed.
Politoed isn’t the only Pokemon that can be obtained by trading with a King’s Rock, as Slowking is another Pokemon that has the same evolution conditions. If players want a Poliwrath instead of a Politoed, players simply need to usea water stoneon a Poliwhirl.
